- Carol Hightshoe
Inspired by the M*A*S*H episode – “As Time Goes By” we are looking for stories about opening time capsules.
In the M*A*S*H episode several items are placed in the time capsule buried by the 4077th that have very unique meanings – but several centuries
into the future will those who find the buried treasure actually understand the significance of the fishing lure that once belonged to Colonel Blake,
Radar’s teddy bear, the broken fan belt, or any of the other items. Would it even be possible for them to understand or will they see the fishing lure
and teddy bear as a sign this was a popular vacation spot?
So here’s the challenge – first you need create and submit a list of ten items and what they mean to the people who contributed them – Think like
M*A*S*H did and find the personal reasons for the contribution (a fishing lure that represented all those who never made it home / a teddy bear that
represented lost innocence, etc). You must also include a “Letter to the Future” that will be appended to the end of the story that uses your time
Your list (without the explanations) will be given to one of the other authors to write a story about finding the time capsule and how their future
generation interprets the items.
Initial consideration for stories will be given to authors who submit time capsule inventories with their meaning and the letter to the future. Please
indicate if you want to write a story when you submit your inventory and letter to the future.
If you want to write a story – please contact after Nov 30th.
Inventories will be assigned a number based on when they are received and authors wishing to write a story will be asked to give a random number
between 1-20. They will receive the available list that matches their number and is not their list. For example – an author gives me #13 and I count
down the list to the 13th available list and it is the one submitted by this author – I will give them the next available list. Depending on number of lists
and number of interested authors – it is possible that some lists will be duplicated.
EDIT: I'm changing the way lists are used - instead of assigning a list to the author - I am going to link to the lists here. Those who sent
a list are not allowed to use their own list. While opening a time capsule should be a surprise as to what is found inside, I imagine most
authors will be more comfortable picking a list that they feel they can tell a story around. However, if you prefer to have me give you a
list randomly - don't hesitate to email and ask.
Break the story-writing rules if you want. If you use a tried and true plotline, twist it in an original and interesting way. Original stories are preferred.
Query for reprints.

free to send the editor a story. In your cover email, please tell the editor a bit about yourself and a quick one-line synopsis of the story. Include
genre. If experimental, please explain the type or how so the editor doesn’t edit out the form or reject it out of hand. Thank you.
